BIG LEAGUE BASEBALL EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN AWAITING ADOPTION OR KIDS IN MENTORING PROGRAMS
According to The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTFA), there are currently 129,000 children in the U.S. foster care system awaiting adoption. Many of them will spend five years or more in foster care before they are adopted. Five years is a lifetime to a child.
Working with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, MLB Umpires provide a fun-filled day at big league ballparks for children awaiting adoption and youth in mentoring programs. In addition to tickets from some of the best seats in the stadium, kids receive a goody bag of baseball treats and an opportunity to step on to the field for a souvenir baseball and photo.
BUILD-A-BEAR WORKSHOP EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN COPING WITH CANCER
MLB Umpires recognize that a small act of kindness like giving a child a teddy bear has a very positive impact and lifts the spirits of the entire family. Through our BLUE for Kids program, umpires visit children's hospitals across the country and host Build-A-Bear Workshops for pediatric patients coping with a lengthy stay in the hospital. Umpires have hosted twenty-nine events since the program started and often invite a ballclub's mascot to attend for photo opportunities with the kids.
MLB Umpires Laz Diaz and Wally Bell (L-R) host big league experiences for kids awaiting adoption.
MLB Umpires have hosted twenty-nine children's hospital events since the program started in 2006.
